It's hard to think about, but the Washington Commanders' season is going downhill quickly, and people are already thinking about drastic changes that need to be made this offseason, including the roster.
If the Commanders lose the next three games, it will be time to chalk it up as a bad season and start thinking about the possible offseason moves in free agency and the 2026 NFL draft. In the meantime, the college football season is in full swing, and mock drafts are coming hot off the press.
The latest mock draft by the A to Z Sports team has the Commanders finally selecting a playmaker on defense in the first round.
The Commanders have one of the hardest remaining schedules of the season, and are currently projected to finish with the 12th overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. A lot of people have criticized the Commanders' approach to not swing big on a pass rusher this past offseason, as they decided to bargain shop instead. A to Z Sports NFL Draft managing editor Travis May has the Commanders taking their biggest need of the offseason, with edge rusher Keldric Faulk from Auburn.
"Keldric Faulk is a do-it-all defensive end with a 6’6″, 285-pound frame, elite length, strength, and hands. He’s not converting many of his pressures into sacks this season, but he’s still posting strong rate stats where it matters. The Commanders need better edge play, and Faulk is the total package." – A to Z Sports Managing Editor, Travis May
Faulk is the perfect fit on the Commanders' defense that will likely receive a major overhaul this offseason. Dorance Armstrong is out for the rest of the season, but he needs a running mate who can get to the quarterback and stop the run at a high level. Faulk is a force with his size and freak athleticism, with so many more traits to tap into as he will still only be 20 years old when he's drafted.
#WarEagle DL Keldric Faulk was No. 3 on my preseason Big Board and he didn't disappoint last night

Disruptive from the get-go in both phases.
Box score = 4 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU ... also consistently saw OL slide his way and #WDE ran stunts opposite to pressure QB pic.twitter.com/UxuYKZIGjG
A big topic will be how the Commanders lack real draft capital once again, with a roster that still needs a lot of work. The team has two more games before the trade deadline, and two losses could start conversations to sell the few tradable assets they do have in Daron Payne, Brandon Coleman, and Noah Igbinoghene. As it currently stands, the Commanders have six draft picks and qualify for a compensatory pick that could turn into a sixth-round pick after losing Wise for the season, but it's not guaranteed.
Selecting Faulk would solidify the position for years to come with his age, and Armstrong is still under contract, with no timetable for his return from his knee injury. It wouldn't surprise me if the Commanders decided to sign someone in free agency as well, but drafting a pass rusher in this loaded draft class is a smart move.
