The Minnesota Vikings have a Super Bowl-caliber defense at their disposal, but they don’t have a quarterback capable of leading them to the promised land. Could that change in the coming day?
It’s no secret that Kyler Murray hasn’t been the answer at quarterback for the Vikings. Although he’s set to miss Week 9 due to a hamstring injury, most people assume he’s being benched in favor of Carson Wentz.
“It’s hard not to look at the current status of Murray’s hamstring “tightness” as cover for a soft benching of Murray,” NFL insider Mike Florio wrote. “That gives the Vikings a chance to let Carson Wentz, who played well enough in most of the Week 1 win over the Packers and all of the Week 2 win over the Bears.”
During Prime Video’s coverage of “Thursday Night Football,” NFL reporter James Palmer addressed Minnesota’s quarterback situation. He said a trade is “on the table” for the Vikings.
“They know the market. They know what the options are out there. Their general manager has been working the phones over the last several weeks on a variety of positions, so he knows what’s out there,” Palmer said. “I’m told to keep an eye on what happens Monday night and potentially, the idea of adding to that quarterback room or making a change, is on the table for Minnesota.”
With the NFL trade deadline set for Nov. 10, the Vikings really have two options they can pursue at the quarterback position.
In a perfect world, the Vikings find a way to trade for Kirk Cousins before the deadline. He’s been excellent for the Las Vegas Raiders this season, completing 63.6% of his passes for 2,124 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Raiders have their quarterback of the future in Fernando Mendoza, so it’s unlikely Cousins will be on their roster in 2027.
Maybe, just maybe, the Vikings will make an intriguing offer that forces the Raiders to start the Mendoza era sooner than expected.
Mac Jones filled in admirably for Brock Purdy last season, completing 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. There’s no question he’d give Minnesota’s passing attack a much-needed spark.
For what it’s worth, 49ers general manager John Lynch wasn’t willing to commit either way when asked about a trade involving his backup quarterback.
“I got to leave that alone,” Lynch said in September, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “What I will tell you is, I think a lot of people see all that and say, OK, there’s opportunity. It also tells you we’re very fortunate to have a guy like Brock [Purdy], franchise quarterback, but then to have a guy like Mac in the event [of Purdy getting injured]. There’s no more important position in football — they’re all important — but I think we know as your quarterback goes, so goes your team. So, I think it’s a really special situation to have Brock here and to have Mac here. And to have a guy we’re really excited about with Kurtis Rourke.
If the Vikings make a convincing offer, the 49ers may part ways with Jones. After all, he’s set to be a free agent in the offseason.
