Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy could be a candidate to become the Tennessee Titans’ next head coach because of his familiarity with Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
Nagy, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, overlapped with Borgonzi in Kansas City. Borgonzi worked for the Chiefs from 2009 through 2024, rising from administrator of college scouting to assistant general manager. Nagy has had two stints with the Chiefs, the first coming from 2013 through 2017.
After four years as the Chicago Bears’ head coach, Nagy rejoined the Chiefs as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach in 2022. He replaced Eric Bieniemy as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator beginning in 2023.
Jones also listed veteran head coach Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as potential candidates. McCarthy, who most recently coached the Dallas Cowboys, worked with Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker from 2009 through 2018 when both were with the Green Bay Packers.
Tennessee fired second-year head coach Brian Callahan in October. The New York Giants, who dismissed Brian Daboll in November, are the only other team to make an in-season coaching change as of Dec. 28.
“There will be others to interview there, and I wouldn’t necessarily call anyone the frontrunner just yet,” Jones wrote. “But I won’t be surprised to see this process move quickly in Tennessee considering all the lead time the Titans have had to prepare.”
A former standout quarterback at Delaware, Nagy played professionally in the Arena Football League before transitioning full time into coaching. After coaching various high school teams, Nagy broke into the NFL as an intern under Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid in 2008.
Nagy went 34-31 over four seasons as the Bears’ head coach, leading Chicago to postseason berths in 2018 and 2020. However, the Bears lost in the NFC wild-card round both times, and Chicago fired him after a 6-11 finish in 2021.
A disappointing end to his time in Chicago has not deterred Nagy, who interviewed for the New York Jets’ head coaching vacancy last offseason. The Jets instead hired Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Nagy returned for another season in Kansas City.
It is unclear whether Titans interim coach Mike McCoy will have an opportunity to interview for the full-time position. The Titans are 2-7 under McCoy, who previously went 27-37 as head coach of the then-San Diego Chargers from 2013 through 2016.
The 3-12 Titans close the season with games against the New Orleans Saints (5-10) and Jacksonville Jaguars (11-4). Tennessee has not reached the postseason since 2021.
