Knee-deep in training camp, the Washington Commanders have enjoyed positive signs. Their fans have taken the brunt of Davante Adams’ negative words. And the Commanders have troubles in the form of three players struggling early during NFL training camp.
On the list are safety Darrick Forrest, tackle Braden Daniels and running back Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Forrest is the biggest surprise on this list as he entered the year under starting consideration. The three-year veteran, a fifth-round pick in 2021, started 16 games over the last two seasons and had four interceptions in 2022.
Commanders’ safety Darrick Forrest struggling
However, Forrest is languishing as third on the depth chart, behind projected free safety starter Quan Martin and backup Percy Butler. He is coming off an injury-filled season that saw him play in only five games.
Forrest entered training camp in a contract year, but he hasn’t been able to impress the new Commanders coaching staff. Recovered from the shoulder injury, Forrest had high hopes earlier this year and told commanders.com, “I’m excited for this year. I’m extremely excited. I really just want to go out there and play my brand of football.”
He also expressed excitement about playing for Commanders new coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt.
“You wanna run and hit?” he said. “Oh yeah. That’s my brand of football. There’s something about being physical. It just brings excitement to the game. And when you hit somebody hard, that adrenaline gets going.”
But Forrest hasn’t been to break through either at free safety or strong safety, where Jeremy Chinn holds down the top spot with Jeremy Reaves listed as the backup. Also, Mike Sainristill seems to have the inside track on the nickelback slot.
There’s still time for Forrest to turn things around, but he needs to get momentum going in his direction soon.
OT Braeden Daniels looking for an opening
The fourth-round draft pick in 2023 hasn’t had many opportunities to show what he’s got in his short NFL career. He spent what would have been his rookie season on injured reserve with a torn bicep.
A tackle in college, Daniels may have to make this year’s team as a guard. But he doesn’t have experience with the position, so he’s having to learn on the fly. And things haven’t gone great so far in the Commanders training camp.
Quinn told si.com that the team is giving Daniels, along with teammate Ricky Stromberg, some different looks.
“Yeah, we’ve put them both at two different spots,” Quinn said. “So, you’ll see in the days ahead, Braeden some working back outside to tackle. So, that’s part of the deal when you’re with the twos and the threes to different spots, different things at different positions. So, you’ll see that some in practice as well as in the preseason games, to make sure there’s not a backup player, not a one-hole position. So, showing the versatility there, that’s a really big deal.”
Daniels is listed as third-team tackle right now, behind Brandon Coleman and Cornelius Lucas. It’s a difficult spot for Daniels, who has to improve quickly while still on a learning curve.
RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. trying to hold on
There’s no doubt about No. 1 and No. 2 in the Commanders’ backfield. Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler will take care of those duties and a huge percentage of the touches.
And Rodriguez expected to be the No. 3 guy, ready to go in case of injuries and hoping to get some touches himself. However, Jeremy McNichols and Michael Wiley may have caught Rodriguez. At the very least they’ve put pressure on him.
But it’s not like Rodriguez has been forgotten. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry in limited action last season for the Commanders. He showed burst and some big-play ability. The sixth-round pick rushed for 247 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in 2023.

Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.
Shohei Ohtani named in lawsuit regarding $240M real estate project
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has been named in a lawsuit that was filed in Hawaii on Friday. Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, are being sued by a real estate investor and a broker in Hawaii who have accused Ohtani and Balelo of sabotaging a $240M real estate deal for a development on the Big Island. According to court documents that were obtained by Jimmy Golen of The Associated Press, real estate developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto say Ohtani and Balelo deliberately had them removed from the project “for no reason other than their own financial self-interest.” The lawsuit claims Ohtani was brought into the deal for his promotional value and that he and his agent pushed the founders of the project out using “threats and baseless legal claims.” “Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity,” the lawsuit states. “Plaintiffs bring this suit to expose Defendants’ misconduct and to ensure that the rules of contract, fair dealing, and accountability apply equally to all — celebrity or not.” Hayes and Matsumoto have also accused Ohtani and Balelo of trying to push them out of a similar neighboring development project. The $240M Big Island development is located along Hapuna Beach, which is rated one of the top beaches in the world. Matsumoto was supposed to be the listing agent for the properties, which average more than $17.3M each. A brochure for the project stated that Ohtani, who was called “Japan’s Babe Ruth” has committed to buying one of the 14 properties and acting as a “celebrity spokesperson” for the development. Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700M contract with the Dodgers prior to the 2024 season. The two-way star is having another monster year with a .284 average, 42 home runs, 78 RBI and a 1.013 OPS entering Tuesday. Ohtani has also returned to pitching this season and has a 2.37 ERA across 19 innings. Ohtani was also connected to a massive gambling scandal last year, though Major League Baseball determined that the 31-year-old was not guilty of any wrongdoing.
Notre Dame believed to be trending toward surprise choice at quarterback
The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.
Ex-NBA player Sebastian Telfair hoping for pardon from Donald Trump
Sebastian Telfair is preparing to serve six months in prison but is hoping for some help from President Donald Trump. Telfair was among the former NBA players who were charged in 2021 with defrauding the NBA’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan of approximately $358,000 in fake medical and dental claims. The former first-round pick was initially given a three-year suspended sentence that involved supervised release. But he violated the terms of his suspended sentence, which led to him being sentenced in June to six months in prison. Telfair was getting ready to report to prison and pleaded for the president to step in and pardon him. “Trump, go check in on my story and you’re definitely going to want to pardon me. You’ll hold me accountable and want me to continue to go do good. But I did too good to being sending anybody to jail,” Telfair argued in comments to a reporter from TMZ. Telfair contends that his recent issue is due to a paperwork problem. He feels the resulting sentence he’s received is “super unfair.” Whether President Trump is able to hear his case and pardon him remains to be seen, but Telfair is definitely trying. Telfair, 40, is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and developed a big following as a teenager due to his strong basketball play. He was the No. 13 overall pick in 2004 by Portland and began his career with them as a 19-year-old straight out of high school. Telfair played 10 seasons in the NBA and spent time with eight different teams. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 assists per game during his career.
