As the dust settles from the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers find themselves at a pivotal juncture. Despite a strong showing last season, the team fell short of their ultimate goal. Now, with a reloaded roster from the draft, the 49ers must turn their attention to the free agent market to shore up key positions and make a serious run at the Super Bowl. Here are three free agents the 49ers must target to complete their championship puzzle: Emmanuel Ogbah, Justin Simmons, and Billy Turner.

Reflecting on the 2023 Season

The 49ers started the 2023 season with a strong 5-0 record. However, they stumbled with three consecutive losses starting in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns, heading into their bye week. Post-bye, the team rebounded impressively, winning six straight games. A Week 14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks secured their fourth playoff berth in five seasons. The following week, a win over the Arizona Cardinals clinched the NFC West for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2011-2012.

With a Week 17 win against the Washington Commanders, the 49ers secured the NFC’s number one seed for the first time since 2019. They finished the regular season at 12-5. They edged out the Green Bay Packers 24-21 in the Divisional Round and made their fourth NFC Championship Game appearance in five years. Overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit, the 49ers defeated the Detroit Lions 34-31, setting an NFL record for the largest halftime comeback in a championship game. This win led them to their second Super Bowl appearance in five seasons, their eighth overall.

In Super Bowl 58, a rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers fell short again. They lost 25-22 in overtime. Despite the heartbreak, their resilience and ability to overcome adversity throughout the season underscored their potential for future success.

Here we’ll look at the three free agent players whom the San Francisco 49ers must target after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Emmanuel Ogbah

First on the list is Emmanuel Ogbah. He is a veteran defensive end known for his consistent and formidable presence. Over recent seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Ogbah has excelled at pressuring quarterbacks and disrupting plays. His versatility and experience would significantly boost the 49ers’ defensive line. He could form a fearsome duo with Nick Bosa. Ogbah’s addition would enhance the pass rush and provide valuable depth. This would allow for effective rotation to keep the defensive line fresh throughout the season.

Again, the 49ers need edge depth after not drafting any defensive linemen. Ogbah is a reliable edge rusher with 5.5 sacks in 15 games last season. As such, he fits the bill. Though his role might overlap with Yetur Gross-Matos, Ogbah’s proven track record over his eight-year career justifies his addition.

Justin Simmons

The 49ers should also target Justin Simmons. He is a two-time Pro Bowl safety recently released by the Denver Broncos in a cap-saving move. Despite going unsigned through the draft, Simmons remains a top-tier option. The Niners drafted defensive back Malik Mustapha in Round 4 and might aim to pair him with Ji’Ayir Brown. This is especially true with Talanoa Hufanga recovering from a torn ACL and entering a contract year.

Simmons would be a very reliable and impactful choice. His ball-hawking skills and leadership would bring stability and playmaking ability to the 49ers’ secondary. He would complement the younger talents and fortify the defensive backfield.

Billy Turner

Lastly, the 49ers should consider Billy Turner to bolster their offensive line. Despite not drafting an early-round offensive lineman, the team did select interior lineman Dominick Puni in Round 4. However, he doesn’t address the need for an upgrade over right tackle Colton McKivitz. The 32-year-old Turner offers experience and versatility that could either upgrade the right tackle position or create healthy competition.

Turner spent three years with the Green Bay Packers, excelling in a system similar to San Francisco’s. Though Pro Football Focus credited him with allowing four sacks last season, Turner’s addition would be a low-risk, potentially high-reward move. His presence would ensure better protection for quarterback Brock Purdy and more effective run blocking. Those are crucial for the 49ers’ offensive success.

Looking Ahead

In the wake of the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers are poised to make another strong push for the Super Bowl. However, to truly solidify their status as contenders, they must target key free agents who can fill critical gaps in their roster. Emmanuel Ogbah, Justin Simmons, and Billy Turner represent the perfect additions to bolster the team roster. By securing these talented players, the 49ers would not only address their most pressing needs. They would also send a clear message to the rest of the NFL: they are all-in on winning the Super Bowl. With these strategic acquisitions, the 49ers can turn their championship aspirations into reality.
