The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to improve upon their 2-9 record in Week 13. On Sunday, they take on the 7-5 Houston Texans in an AFC South divisional matchup.
However, midway through the second quarter, all of the attention was on Trevor Lawrence. The 25-year-old quarterback took a hard hit to the head while sliding. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair dove at Lawrence's head, causing an apparent concussion for the Jaguars star.
A fight immediately ensued after the collision that turned into a team-on-team collision. Jaguars players rushed over to Al-Shaair to defend Lawrence while Texans players jumped in the middle to mediate the chaos.
Officials brought a cart out for Lawrence, who was eventually taken off of the field to be evaluated. Once the fighting was brought to a halt, referees issued an ejection for Al-Shaair for his hit on Lawrence.

However, he wasn't the only player ejected from the game. Officials also ejected Jaguars tight end Evan Engram and cornerback Jarrian Jones for their involvement in the fight, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. In the grand scheme of things, that single play led to Houston losing a linebacker for the game, while Jacksonville is without its starting quarterback, tight end, and cornerback.
"Jaguars TE Evan Engram and CB Jarrian Jones were also ejected. They stood up for Trevor Lawrence."
Al-Shaair's actions on the field led to some ridicule on social media. Long time NFL reporter John McClain believes the league should suspend the 27-year-old linebacker for hitting Lawrence's head during his slide.
I’ve been covering the NFL for 48 years and I can’t remember a cheap shot worse than what Al-Shaair did to Lawrence. He’ll be lucky to avoid a suspension.

This was Lawrence's first game back on the field since the 28-23 Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Jaguars quarterback suffered an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder in that contest and missed the next two games heading into the Week 12 bye week.
Lawrence is already ruled out from Sunday's contest with a concussion. He'll be in the league's concussion protocol and won't return until he passes it. For now, it's unclear when Lawrence may return to the lineup, as healing from a concussion can take several weeks.
This season, the Jaguars quarterback has recorded 2,045 passing yards, 14 total touchdowns, and seven interceptions while throwing a 60.5% completion percentage. Before the start of the 2024 season, the Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year $275 million contract extension with $200 million guaranteed.
