3 recent late-round draft picks who can emerge as San Francisco 49ers’ next key homegrown talents during the 2025 season

The San Francisco 49ers' roster transition this offseason will give plenty of players a chance to step into the spotlight over the next few seasons.

The peak of this most recent 49ers build was reached thanks in part to some aggressive personnel moves but, just as importantly, the successful development of in-house talent via the later stages of the NFL Draft. San Francisco's talent well did not get many additions via marquee investments thanks to the failed Trey Lance investment but seeing names like Dre Greenlaw, Colton McKivitz, Jauan Jennings, Jaylon Moore, Deommodore Lenoir, Talanoa Hufanga , Spencer Burford, and Brock Purdy step into prominent roles and develop as draft choices picked on the third day of their respective NFL Drafts fueled the roster.

With that nucleus either having matured out of rookie contracts or on the fringe of needing new deals, it's time for the focus to shift to the next round of late round talent to try to identify who can be next to step up. Who gives the 49ers the best chance of emerging? Here are three Day 3 draft choices entering their second or third season who could emerge as the next late-draft success story for the 49ers.

Isaac Guerendo, Running Back

2024 draft choice: 4th round, 129th overall

It's hard to bet against the Day 3 track record for Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch at running back. The 49ers have found a slew of backs with productive tenures in the system. Guerendo has the qualities needed to be a productive player and got some limited burn for the 49ers last season. He promptly averaged 5.0 yards per carry and averaged an impressive 3.04 yards after contact per rush.

Guerendo was a bit explosive play-reliant as a rookie, with 209 of his 420 rushing yards on the season coming on nine carries that went for 10+ yards from scrimmage. But an extra year in the system should bolster his efficiency and consistency making reads in San Francisco's zone rushing attack.

Dee Winters, Linebacker

2023 draft choice: 6th round, 216th overall

Winters is going to have the first crack at replacing Dre Greenlaw after an improved sophomore campaign with the 49ers in 2024. Logging nearly 400 defensive snaps, Winters got his first sampling of prominent playing time and looked like a capable off-ball linebacker. Winters is going to catch heat from 2025 third-round draft choice Nick Martin, but the time on task should give Winters a leg up initially in the competition.

If he makes the most of it, he could feasibly hold serve next to Fred Warner. An undersized but rangy defender, Winters has what you need to execute in space, which is at a premium for second-level defenders thanks to the NFL trends on offense.

Malik Mustapha, Safety*

2024 draft choice: 4th round, 124th overall

I'll put an asterisk here because you are probably aware that Mustapha is going to be a hit for San Francisco. He's a ferocious tackler with an intimidating set of pads. Mustapha's rookie season came to a crashing halt with a torn ACL suffered in Week 18 of the regular season in 2024. Whenever he's ready to return to the field, 49ers fans should have sky high expectations.

He looks, to me, like a very worthy heir to Talanoa Hufanga in the secondary. The hope is that he'll be healthier long-term, as Hufanga played half of his career snaps in one season in 2022 and was limited to just over 300 snaps last season. Mustapha, I think, is going to be a star if his body cooperates. So you may feel he broke out last season — I wouldn't argue with you. But this feels like a player that's just scratching the surface of how good he can be.
