3 Safeties Seahawks Can Sign After Bud Clark Injury

The Seattle Seahawks are going to need some reinforcements at the safety position after losing Bud Clark to an ankle injury during the team's 19-16 loss against the Tennessee Titans in the second week of the preseason.

The Seahawks could find Clark's replacement from within on the back half of the depth chart, but they could also look at the open market to see if any veterans are willing to come on board. Here's a look at three players the Seahawks could look into signing to boost their safety depth.

Harrison Smith

Smith has played his entire 14-year career with the Minnesota Vikings after being chosen in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He has six Pro Bowls on his resume, which brings a ton of experience to any team in the league.

Smith was released by the Vikings earlier this offseason, but he has yet to announce his retirement. He is still trying to figure out exactly what he will do for the upcoming season, but the Seahawks might be the ideal fit for him. At 37 years old, Smith is not necessarily looking to join just any team. He will want to play for a squad that has Super Bowl potential, and the Seahawks are among those squads that do.

Smith would sign a veteran's minimum contract, which wouldn't hurt the Seahawks salary cap much, if at all. Adding Smith to an already elite defense will give the Seahawks some boosts both on and off the field, which could be what the team needs to achieve its lofty goals.

Donovan Wilson

The Seahawks brought Wilson in for a workout earlier in the offseason, but ultimately decided not to sign him at the time. Things might be different now that Clark is injured, as Wilson could be his replacement.

Wilson spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, where he played under Aden Durde, who is now the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks. Wilson's experience with Durde and other players like Trevon Diggs, Dante Fowler Jr., and Demarcus Lawrence could be a plus for the Seahawks in what they are looking for.

Quandre Diggs

Diggs may have played his final down in the NFL after not signing with a team during the offseason, but he could be looking to suit up for the Seahawks one more time.

Diggs made three Pro Bowls with the Seahawks from 2020 to 2022, but ultimately left the team ahead of the 2024 campaign. He played with the Titans for 17 games across two seasons but re-signed with the Seahawks in November of last year. Diggs did not suit up for the playoffs, but he was awarded a Super Bowl ring for being part of the roster.

Diggs has gone unsigned for the entirety of training camp, but a return to the place where he had his best NFL success could be an option. His knowledge of the system would allow him to jump right back in and provide depth on an as-need basis.
