The undrafted free agent out of Oregon had himself a day, after receiving praise from defensive coordinator Jessie Minter through the early days of training camp.

The 5’10 180 lb cornerback came up with a huge turnover by undercutting an out route and notching an interception on 3rd & 9, returning it 60 yards to set up a 2-yard TD run by Kimani Vidal.

He also made an impact on special teams, adding a tackle on the kickoff unit, as well as a pass defense on the Lions’ opening drive, further making his case to make the team.

The slot corner, who also has the versatility to play on the outside, made a solid case to push for that final cornerback spot on the roster based on his performance.

KeAndre Lambert-Smith showed out in the preseason game to the tune of 2 receptions, 43 receiving yards, and 1 TD. Lambert-Smith has been gaining momentum in training camp and backed it up with this standout performance.

His two catches came off a fade route down the right sideline for a 28-yard gain and a quick slant route in the red zone, resulting in a 15-yard score.

It brings his yards per reception to 21.5 on the day, further highlighting his ability to be a downfield playmaker after ranking top 10 in the nation in yards per catch at 19.6 in his final year of college football.

Arguably, the biggest winner from this first preseason contest was former 3rd overall pick Trey Lance. He went 13 of 20 (65%) for 120 passing yards and 2 TDs, en route to a fantastic Chargers debut.

His poise in the pocket and decision-making ability shone throughout the three quarters he played, as he helped propel the Chargers to a comfortable lead past the Detroit Lions’ reserves.

It remains to be seen who wins the backup quarterback job behind Justin Herbert, but for now, Lance is firmly entrenched with veteran Taylor Heinicke for that role.
