49ers activate WR amid Brandon Aiyuk situation

The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back a wide receiver to the 53-man roster amid more uncertainty regarding the return of star receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the 49ers activated Demarcus Robinson on Thursday. In a corresponding move, San Francisco placed Nick Bosa on season-ending injured reserve for an ACL injury.

"The 49ers activated WR Demarcus Robinson and placed DE Nick Bosa on season-ending IR," Barrows posted on X.

Robinson signed a two-year contract with the 49ers in March. He was suspended by the league for the first three games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The San Francisco 49ers get a WR back

Robinson recorded 31 receptions for 505 yards and seven touchdowns for the Los Angeles Rams in 2024. The veteran receiver is a helpful addition to the roster that is without Aiyuk, who's still recovering from an ACL injury from last season.

On Thursday, 49ers general manager John Lynch told KNBR that Aiyuk is still "not close" to returning to action.

"No setbacks... There's different levels with the ACL, Brandon had a significant injury," Lynch said. "He's a really gifted athlete and a really hard worker. There's no absolutes on these things, he's gotta continue to hit markers. We'll be a better team when Brandon's out there, so we look forward to that day, but it's not close."

The 49ers have had an incredible 3-0 run to start the season amid significant injury issues with quarterback Brock Purdy, Aiyuk and Bosa.

Robinson will boost the receiver corps against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, but San Francisco needs Aiyuk to return so the offense can produce consistently at a high level. With Bosa gone for the season, the 49ers are going to need the offense to score a lot of points.
