The San Francisco 49ers entered Sunday’s divisional matchup with the Arizona Cardinals shorthanded, with star quarterback Brock Purdy sidelined. With the offense depleted, head coach Kyle Shanahan has turned to his defense to keep the 49ers’ momentum going as they search for a third consecutive win.

The defense lost many key pieces in the offseason, but the front office has continued to piece together starters from the draft around the team’s superstar defensive end, Nick Bosa. The 27-year-old edge rusher is playing in his seventh season in the league after San Francisco selected him with the 2nd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Ohio State product has built an impressive résumé with the 49ers, collecting Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2019, Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, and five Pro Bowl appearances.

49ers Share Latest Nick Bosa Injury News

During Sunday’s matchup with the Cardinals, Bosa was noticeably absent from the field during a defensive sequence in the second quarter.

With concern mounting, the 49ers announced he had been removed with a knee injury and would be questionable to return. “Injury Update: Nick Bosa (knee) is questionable to return,” the team wrote on X.

This was already a disappointing development, as the 49ers’ defense had been shutting down Kyler Murray and the Cardinals, keeping the team in the game with Mac Jones struggling under center and the offense producing just six points heading into the second half. As the second half began, the 49ers unfortunately downgraded Bosa from questionable to out.

"49ers DE Nick Bosa has been ruled out today due to a knee injury," ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote.

Bosa is currently in the second year of his five-year, $170 million contract extension with the 49ers, signed in 2023. His status will be monitored postgame as the 49ers look to win a third straight game to open the year without their star edge rusher.
