Key Points:

  • San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has missed two games this season with turf toe injury.
  • San Francisco 49ers elevate Mac Jones to starting role for third time.
  • San Francisco 49ers promote quarterback Adrian Martinez from the practice squad to the active roster.

The San Francisco 49ers have had one of the most bizarre starts to the 2025 NFL season. Although injuries have again ravaged the team, the NFC West power has gotten off to a 3-1 start as it prepares to take on the Los Angeles Rams (3-1) on Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football."

Despite notable names such as All-Pro tight end George Kittle (hamstring), wide receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle), wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee), All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa (knee) and quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) all suffering injuries and missing action, the team has somehow been able to overcome its issues.

The most confusing saga regarding injuries is undoubtedly that of Purdy, who suffered a turf toe injury in Week 1, missed the next two weeks and returned last week.

In the 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Purdy threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two picks and lost a fumble.

Although it wasn't the return showing they wanted to see, fans assumed that the nagging turf toe injury was behind the Pro Bowl quarterback.

However, the 49ers announced on Wednesday that he would not be suiting up for Thursday's game as a result of the same injury.

A development that forced the team to make a move at quarterback for the NFC West clash.

With Purdy out and Mac Jones in line to make his third start of the season as he looks to move his record to 3-0 on the year, the 49ers announced that they would also be promoting Adrian Martinez from the practice squad.

The former Nebraska/Kansas State quarterback was undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, despite totaling 96 career touchdowns (51 passing, 45 rushing), and eventually found his way to the UFL's Birmingham Stallions, where he was named league MVP and led the team to a UFL title last season.

Although the team is likely confident in Jones, the 49ers do have a versatile dual threat behind him in Martinez who can certainly change the pace of the game.

Thursday night's game is scheduled to kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET.
