The San Francisco 49ers recently made a surprising trade to add some veteran depth to their backfield, and the timing of the deal may not have been a coincidence.
The 49ers traded a sixth-round pick to the Washington Commanders on Aug. 22 in exchange for running back Brian Robinson Jr . At the time, the move looked like a savvy way for San Francisco to replace the production they got last season from Jordan Mason, whom they traded to the Minnesota Vikings in March. But could the move have had something to do with Christian McCaffrey's health?
McCaffrey popped up on San Francisco's injury report on Thursday with a calf issue. There has been no indication to this point that he is in danger of missing Sunday's season-opening game against the Seattle Seahawks. One report suggested the Niners are merely taking precautions, and they're said to have a stunning opinion on McCaffrey.
Of course, McCaffrey has a lengthy injury history. He dealt with Achilles tendonitis in both legs ahead of the start of last season, and the 49ers repeatedly downplayed the issue. McCaffrey wound up sitting out until Week 10, so fans are naturally concerned that something similar could happen again in 2025.
The Commanders drafted Robinson in the third round in 2022. The former Alabama star was shot multiple times that offseason during an attempted robbery in Washington, D.C., but he still managed to play in 12 games as a rookie.
Robinson had more than 700 rushing yards in each of his three seasons in Washington. He rushed for a career-high 799 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. Robinson also made a big impact in the passing game in 2023 with 36 catches, 368 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has been able to get the most out of numerous running backs over the years. If McCaffrey misses time, Shanahan may have to work his magic with Robinson.
McCaffrey was not on the injury report until Thursday, but it is possible the 49ers knew he was banged up and decided to pull the trigger on the Robinson deal. If not, the timing seems to have worked out very nicely for them.
