49ers bring back son of franchise icon

Less than two months after waiving Terique Owens with an injury designation, the San Francisco 49ers are bringing the wide receiver back into the fold.

The undrafted free agent is the son of Hall of Fame wideout (and Niners icon) Terrell Owens.

With a stacked wide receivers' room including Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings, there doesn't appear to be room for the younger Owens to significantly impact San Francisco soon, barring multiple injuries. The team also hopes to get rookie first-round pick Ricky Pearsall back from injured reserve in October.

If Terique eventually makes the 49ers active roster and takes the field, however, his debut would come more than two decades after his father played his last snap with the organization.

San Francisco selected the now-50-year-old Owens in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft and he spent eight seasons with the team. He began a streak of five straight Pro Bowl campaigns in 2000 and was named first-team All-Pro in three consecutive years and four out of five years.

The elder Owens led the league in touchdown catches three times, including a career-high 16 in 2001, and is third all-time in receiving scores with 153. He's eighth all-time in receptions (1,078) and third in receiving yards (15,934).

Terrell finished his career with two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, three with the Dallas Cowboys, one with the Buffalo Bills and one with the Cincinnati Bengals. "T.O." was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 alongside fellow wideout Randy Moss, among others.

Terique started his collegiate football career at Florida Atlantic before transferring to Missouri State. He registered 28 catches for 528 yards with the Bears in 2023 and first signed in the Bay Area in late April.
