49ers’ Brock Purdy Broke Two Massive NFL Records In Week 1 Win

Heading into their Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, there were some concerns for the San Francisco 49ers. How much would Nick Bosa play after a contract extension took until Thursday night to be agreed upon? Would tight end George Kittle be able to get on the field after dealing with a nagging groin injury? 

On top of that, it was anyone’s guess how quarterback Brock Purdy would respond. Purdy injured his elbow in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, hurting his UCL. Week 1 was exactly six months from his time of surgery and he had been on a strict practice schedule during the offseason.

A lot could have gone wrong for the 49ers against the Steelers but the exact opposite occurred; they dominated. San Francisco went into Acrisure Stadium and steamrolled Pittsburgh, dominating in every facet of the game.

While the Steelers didn’t gain a first down until their sixth drive of the game, the 49ers scored points on their first four drives. Purdy was excellent from the first San Francisco offensive snap of the game, as you would have never known he went through an entire offseason of rehab.

Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft completed 19-of-29 attempts for 220 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t have to do much in the second half as the 49ers led 20-7 heading into halftime and scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the third quarter.

In the process, Purdy did make some history. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to win his first six starts of his career while throwing for at least two touchdowns in each of those starts. He has also recorded a quarterback rating of at least 95 in all six of those regular season starts, which is also an NFL record.
