The San Francisco 49ers are trying to make a push this offseason.
Even with most of the biggest dominoes already falling, GM John Lynch is still trying to clean the books to have as much cap space as possible.
That's why they're trading long-term financial health for immediate competitiveness, and why they've restructured Nick Bosa's big contract.
As reported by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Niners will open up more than $15M in cap space, but they'll take a huge cap hit next season.
"The 49ers did a simple restructure on Nick Bosa's contract, clearing $17.172 million in 2026 cap space," Pelissero shared on his X account. "Bosa is still due $23.18 million this season. His 2027 cap number is now a whopping $54,866,753."
Of course, that's not unusual. Teams are constantly restructuring deals, adding void years and pushing the cap hit into the future.
However, the Niners didn't necessarily have to do that now. They already had nearly $42.3M in cap space, per Over The Cap, and they're rumored to move All-Pro tackle Trent Williams if he doesn't agree to a revised deal.
This move now pushes the Niners to $7M over the cap in 2027, with Brock Purdy ($30M), Fred Warner ($29.5M), and Osa Odighizuwa ($20.5M) also carrying massive cap hits.
Once again, the Niners can restructure those contracts to keep pushing those cap hits further into the future, but that's going to catch up to them eventually.
This roster is aging, brittle and expensive. And with no top-line free agents up for grabs right now, perhaps it would've been healthier for their finances to take the big cap hit now instead of mortgaging the future.
