Revenge from the NFC Championship game complete.
The San Francisco 49ers exact revenge on the Philadelphia Eagles in their 42-19 beatdown win.
It was a poor start from the 49ers to start the game. The entire first quarter, in fact, was extremely inadequate, especially on offense. Kyle Shanahan didn't devise the best opening script, which clearly didn't have Christian McCaffrey factored in. He didn't have a single touch in the entire first quarter. That is inexcusable. Opening the game with five straight passes also wasn't the best too.
The Eagles have one of the weakest pass defenses in the league, but simply dropping back and initiating a shootout wasn't going to get it done initially. Running the ball to get the pass rush a little beat up and slowed down was the best course of action. So, of course, once the running game started being utilized in the second quarter, the 49ers started clicking magnificently on offense.
The second quarter was all 49ers, while the Eagles just had to take all the jabs and hook shots. Brock Purdy was slinging it well, McCaffrey became a factor, Brandon Aiyuk was the lead man, and the defense stifled the Eagles' offense. All the momentum was the 49ers going into half-time with a 14-6 lead after being down 0-6 going into the second quarter.
And they rode that momentum coming out of half-time to score an opening touchdown. The 49ers had their foot on the Eagles' neck. Dominance, control, and bullies is what they were at that point. They made the Eagles look like they didn't belong like the Seattle Seahawks last week.
That was until the Eagles responded on the following drive. Dre Greenlaw was ejected for getting into it with the chief of security on the Eagles' sideline. That ejection would spark the Eagles offensively to lead them to a touchdown. It felt like the momentum was starting to swing to the Eagles after that. But the 49ers were unphased.
They came back with a response of their own on offense, but it was one that was an extreme gut punch to the Eagles. It took only five plays for the 49ers to score a touchdown thanks to Deebo Samuel taking a 48-yard pass to the house. The stage was set for Samuel to go off against the Eagles. He had been at the forefront of the trash talk between the two teams, so for him to get three touchdowns and a chunk of yards is fitting. He backed up all his talk, which you cannot say about the Eagles.
From that point, it was all 49ers. San Francisco would end up having five consecutive drives with a touchdown. That is the first time since 2012. Talk about making history. The Eagles stood no chance. The Niners went into their house and WHOOPED them. It was only competitive for the first quarter. After that, the Eagles really didn't belong. No excuses will be heard from the Eagles this game. It does not matter that Hurts exited the game because the score was 35-13 when their offense returned.
The 49ers look like the BEST team in the NFL now. It is tough to deny that, and I had my doubts. They made a statement in this game that they are THAT team. And now, should the 49ers have to come back to Lincoln Field in the playoffs, they know that they can win and dominate the Eagles.
