49ers GM John Lynch: Jauan Jennings asked for trade 'a while ago,' but 'we're not doing that'

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan met with reporters on Wednesday, where Lynch addressed wide receiver Jauan Jennings' contract situation and confirmed that the receiver had previously requested a trade.

Jennings, entering the final year of the two-year deal he signed in 2024, is seeking a new contract extension. In July, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jennings planned to request a trade if a new agreement wasn't reached.

"A while ago, he did (ask to be traded), but that was a long time ago, and we've moved on from that," Lynch said.

He declined to provide a specific timeline but emphasized that the request is no longer an issue for the 49ers.

When asked if Jennings has rescinded the trade request, Lynch clarified: "No, he asked for it, and we've moved on. We're not doing that, so we're moving forward."

Lynch confirmed the team has engaged in contract discussions with Jennings' representatives but offered little detail, saying only, "We'll leave it at that."

Jennings has been sidelined for much of the offseason with a lingering calf injury, raising questions about his availability for Week 1. Lynch acknowledged that the injury is progressing but cautioned against any firm expectations.

"Jauan's still working through his calf issue, making progress," Lynch explained. "We're kind of like everyone else—hopeful but not sure on Week 1, and we'll proceed as such."

When asked if the injury was more serious than initially believed, Lynch admitted, "Yeah, but calves can take a long time. That's one thing with that injury. They can take a while."

Speculation has swirled that Jennings' injury status might be tied to his contract negotiations, but Lynch pushed back on the idea of an either-or scenario.

"Both things can be true," Lynch said. "He wants a new contract, and he's got a hurt calf. So I think people want to assume one or the other. Both things can be true."
