49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reveals plan for Deebo Samuel after contract extension

Deebo Samuel earned his money as a jack-of-all-trades for the San Francisco 49ers, and that's not meant to be a slight.

Samuel can literally do everything as an offensive weapon for San Francisco. Whether he's running the ball, blocking, or being utilized as one of the more explosive wide receivers in football, there's little Samuel can't do.

That's what justified the three-year contract extension worth up to $73.5 million that the 49ers recently gave Samuel to stay in the Bay. It should be no surprise then that head coach Kyle Shanahan, arguably the best offensive mind in the NFL, has no plans to use Samuel any differently moving forward.

Samuel will continue to be a "hybrid" offensive player for the 49ers. What he does on a play-in, play-out basis will simply depend on the situation.

"I think [it's] based off of whatever happens," Shanahan recently said, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "From my standpoint schematically, from our team's personnel, from Deebo's, from what we think gives us the best chance to win, if we wanted to move Deebo to running back that would have been something that we were honest about. ... You can't do that with anybody. You've got to do that with a special player and Deebo is a special player. That's why he's earned this contract that he's got and I think that's why he's going to continue to earn it going forward."

When Shanahan says Samuel will continue to earn his contract, he really does mean it. Adam Schefter reports that the talented offensive weapon can earn up to $1.95 million in rushing incentives.

Wagoner provided more context:

"Samuel can earn $650,000 for each season he has 380 or more rushing yards. If he doesn't get the rushing yardage total, he can earn $150,000 in bonuses in any season in which he scores at least three rushing touchdowns," he wrote. "Either way, he cannot earn more than a total of $650,000 per season or more than $1.95 million over the life of the contract for these rushing incentives."

Samuel caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns last season for the 49ers, averaging 18.2 yards per catch. He also rushed the ball 59 times for 365 yards and eight rushing touchdowns, averaging an incredible 6.2 yards per carry.
