During the Kyle Shanahan era, the 49ers have always dealt with injuries, and this season has been no different. The defensive line has been hit especially hard, with important players such as Nick Bosa, Alfred Collins, and C.J. West missing time. Bosa is expected to return soon, Collins is out for the season, and there is still hope that West can return later this year.

Despite all of that, the 49ers made it through the first seven games of the season with a 6-1 record heading into a much-needed bye week. While players like Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Fred Warner receive most of the attention, several lesser-known contributors have stepped up when the team needed them most.

A couple of rookies, a practice squad player, and a defender acquired for a sixth-round pick have all helped keep the 49ers moving in the right direction.

Sebastian Valdez

Sebastian Valdez, nicknamed “The Hulk,” is a second-year player who spent last season as an undrafted free agent on the 49ers practice squad. Valdez started this season on the practice squad as well, but injuries forced the 49ers to elevate him to the active roster.

He made his NFL debut in Week Three against Arizona and has been contributing ever since.

Valdez may not fill up the stat sheet, currently recording nine tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss, but his impact goes beyond statistics. His ability to plug running lanes, occupy blockers, and disrupt plays in the trenches has made him a valuable part of the defensive line rotation. Every good defense needs players willing to do the dirty work, and Valdez has embraced that role.

Romello Height

Third-round rookie Romello Height has been another bright spot for the defensive line.

The Texas Tech product always seems to find his way around the football and has consistently disrupted opposing quarterbacks. Height currently has one and a half sacks and has generated double-digit pressures through the first half of the season.

What makes his production even more impressive is that he broke his hand in Week Two, missed a game, and has been playing with a club on his hand ever since. His toughness has stood out, and he looks like a player who could have a big future in the 49ers’ defensive front.

Gracen Halton

If there is one player on this list who looks like a draft steal, it’s fourth-round rookie Gracen Halton.

The former Oklahoma standout has made plays against both the run and the pass. His biggest moment came against Seattle when he forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown on the same play.

Every week it feels like Halton is making another impact play. For a rookie defensive lineman, that is exactly what you want to see. Through the first half of the season, he has looked like another mid-round gem for the 49ers scouting department.

Keion White

Last season, the 49ers traded a sixth-round pick to New England for Keion White.

At the time, the move felt like a depth addition for a defense dealing with injuries. This season, White has become much more than that.

He currently leads the 49ers with three and a half sacks and has been one of the team’s most consistent sources of pressure. White has taken advantage of his opportunity and become a key contributor to an improving pass rush.

Every defense needs players capable of winning one-on-one battles, and White has done exactly that.

Honorable Mention

Osa Odighizuwa has quietly held things together all season long and continues to be one of the most reliable players on the defensive line.

Mykel Williams also deserves recognition. While the stats may not jump off the page yet, he looks like a player on the verge of a breakout.

End Of My 49ers Rant

Every time the 49ers have suffered injuries along the defensive line, defensive line coach Kris Kocurek has found a way to get the most out of the next group of players. He deserves a lot of credit for the development of this unit.

The return of Nick Bosa, along with the addition of DeForest Buckner, should make both the run defense and pass rush significantly better during the second half of the season.

The 49ers still have injuries throughout the roster, especially at wide receiver, so it will be interesting to see who steps up next. Jordan Watkins is another young player worth watching. His inexperience and potential were both on display against the Falcons, and his development could become a quietly important factor as the season goes on.

And with trade rumors starting to swirl around the team, who knows what the next chapter of this season might bring?
