49ers insider explains why another blockbuster trade is unlikely

The San Francisco 49ers made a significant move this week, sending a 2027 fourth-round draft pick to the Indianapolis Colts for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. The trade reunites the All-Pro with the team that selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

But are the 49ers done making significant moves? That's the question everyone is asking of general manager John Lynch, particularly with San Francisco sitting at 6-1 and looking to maintain its strong start through the second half of the season.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, however, doesn't expect Lynch to make another splashy move. He explained why during an appearance on Bay Area radio station KNBR.

"The player that I've heard the fans are clamoring for that would be along the lines of a Jeffery Simmons (who was traded to the Chicago Bears) would be maybe on the other side of the ball, [New York Jets] wide receiver Garrett Wilson," Maiocco said, "where you would have to give up a lot because he's under contract for a while. But he's also under contract for a while at a salary up around $30 million a year."

Acquiring a player like Wilson could require a significant investment in both draft capital and salary. With the 49ers already carrying several high-priced players, adding another major contract could be difficult to justify.

Instead, Maiocco believes San Francisco could pursue a more modest deal similar to one it made last season.

"I think that what the 49ers could do would be something similar to what they did last year in getting [DE] Keion White," Maiocco continued, "where you don't necessarily know too much about the player, but he's on a fixed salary for this year and the next, and maybe he's fallen out of favor or doesn't fit a new coach's scheme.

"So, I could see where something like that would happen, but with as many high-priced players as the 49ers have on the team now, currently, and who remain under contract to the team for years to come, I don't see them adding another 30-plus or $25 million player and giving up the first-round draft picks. I think the 49ers value those first-round draft picks."

In other words, Maiocco isn't ruling out another trade before the deadline, but he doesn't expect the 49ers to pursue another blockbuster deal. A lower-cost acquisition that addresses a roster need without sacrificing significant draft capital may be a more realistic approach for Lynch.

The 49ers are currently enjoying their bye week and will reconvene Monday to begin preparations for their Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi's Stadium.
