49ers interview Raiders safeties coach Gerald Alexander for defensive coordinator job
Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

Gerald Alexander just started his job as the Las Vegas Raiders' safeties coach and is already being considered for a promotion—with another team. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers have interviewed Alexander for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

Alexander has been coaching in the NFL since 2020 when he joined the Miami Dolphins as their defensive backs coach. Since 2022, he served as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Raiders this year.

Before his NFL coaching career, Alexander played safety in the NFL for five seasons (2007-2011) and began his coaching journey at the collegiate level in 2013. Before transitioning to the NFL's coaching ranks, he held various roles with Arkansas State, Washington, Indiana State, Montana State, and California.

Other known candidates being considered for the 49ers' defensive coordinator position include former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, 49ers defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen, and 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks.
