San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings addressed reporters on Monday as the team returned from its bye week and began preparations for its Week 15 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. Jennings had been the target of criticism from several players on the Cleveland Browns, the 49ers' most recent opponent. After the game, Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris blasted the 49ers wideout.
"I see exactly why they punched him in the nuts," Harris said, referencing an incident between Jennings and Carolina Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig a week earlier. "I'm surprised nobody has punched him in the jaw yet."
Star pass rusher Myles Garrett echoed Harris' frustration with Jennings.
When asked for his reaction to the comments, Jennings downplayed the severity.
"I thought it was just a lot of talk, honestly," Jennings said. "Just, I think they wanted some attention. That's about it."
Reporters pressed Jennings on whether he believed any of his own comments crossed the line, as Harris suggested.
"I mean, he said some things, so why ain't he saying what he said?" Jennings replied. "I don't know, bro. I do know it ain't that bad. That's what I do know. I'm gonna just keep it to myself, what I said, but I know it wasn't that bad, and he knows that. It's funny. If he sees me to smack me, maybe y'all find out that day."
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have both noted that Jennings' physical, aggressive style of play often irritates opponents. However, Browns players appeared more upset over what Jennings said during an injury stoppage on the field.
"For me, I don't care about trash talk; you can say whatever the hell you want to," Harris elaborated last week. "But usually, when we're inside those white lines, people's families, people's wives, people's children, are off limits."
Jennings was asked where he personally draws the line with on-field trash talk.
"Killing people," Jennings said. "You shouldn't say you want to kill someone. To me, that's where you draw the line."
