49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo questionable; Kyle Shanahan knows who will start vs. Rams

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the week that he wouldn't name a starting quarterback before kickoff of Sunday's "win-or-tie-and-get-in" game against the 12-4 Los Angeles Rams with rookie Trey Lance taking first-team practice reps as veteran Jimmy Garoppolo tries to get right while dealing with the Grade 3 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb and chipped bone that prevented him from playing last weekend.

Shanahan proved Friday he's a man of his word.

According to Chase Goodbread of the NFL's website, Shanahan announced Friday that Garoppolo is questionable for Sunday's contest.

"I know what we're doing, I just don't feel like telling you right now," the coach admitted about his depth chart.

Shanahan's approach makes sense, as the Rams are playing to clinch the NFC West title via a win over a 49ers team that's beaten them in each of the past five matchups. Garoppolo's status past Week 18 is up in the air, and it's been reported he'll need surgery at some point during the offseason to repair his injured thumb.

Lance started the Week 17 win over the Houston Texans and completed 16-of-23 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also added 31 rushing yards on eight carries en route to helping the Niners improve to 9-7.
