49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo to be '100 percent' for Colts game?

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested Wednesday that veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was recovering from the calf contusion he first suffered on Oct. 3 and would start this week's "Sunday Night Football" game against the Indianapolis Colts, while rookie Trey Lance was on track to be sidelined because of the knee sprain he endured versus the Arizona Cardinals ahead of San Francisco's bye.

According to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone, Shanahan offered an update on Garoppolo's status while on the KNBR "Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks" show.

"He's getting better each day," Shanahan said of Jimmy G. "I mean, there shouldn't be any problem with him by Sunday at all. Any time you're coming off the calf injury like that, it takes a little time to get that soreness out, so you'll see it on some throws here and there. But each day it gets much better, and I think he'll be feeling 100% by Sunday."

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Lance missed practice for the second straight day. Shanahan can promote Nate Sudfeld from the practice squad to serve as Garoppolo's backup, if necessary.

Earlier this month, Shanahan hinted he wants to keep Garoppolo his starter even when Lance is healthy as long as the 29-year-old does nothing to lose his job via his play. Thus far, Garoppolo has completed 66.1% of his passes for 925 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in less than four total games this season.

The 49ers have, however, lost three straight contests to fall to 2-3, and one wonders if Shanahan has a certain number in mind regarding the loss column for when he'd start thinking about the future and hand the keys to the offense over to Lance.
