49ers' Kyle Juszczyk: 'Not too much of a shocker' Trey Lance replaced Jimmy Garoppolo

One of the worst-kept secrets of the NFL offseason was confirmed on Tuesday when San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the club has "moved on" from veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to 2021 rookie Trey Lance as its starting quarterback.

Lance served as the team's QB1 throughout spring workouts and mandatory minicamp as Garoppolo recovered from March shoulder surgery. Last month, San Francisco fullback Kyle Juszczyk told reporters he could "only say positive things" about the 22-year-old signal-caller who had become "a very natural leader" in Garoppolo's absence. As Rohan Chakravarthi noted for 49ers WebZone, Juszczyk spoke with media members on Tuesday and indicated those in the locker room knew Lance was the offense's new CEO some time ago.

"I'm excited about it. I think we all see the potential, and I think with the people that we have surrounded Trey with and his work ethic, and what we saw through OTAs, we feel like he could reach that potential," Juszczyk said about the change atop the depth chart. "It's nice that Kyle came out and finally said it publicly, but I felt like we all kind of felt that and saw that in OTAs, so it's not too much of a shocker or a new thing."

The 49ers are actively shopping Garoppolo to any would-be buyers ahead of preseason games but may need to play the 30-year-old next month to put him on display and show he's fully recovered from his shoulder setback.
