Optimism remains high with respect to the 49ers’ defense being much healthier to begin this season than it was at the end of the 2025 campaign. That includes the anticipated return of Fred Warner.

The All-Pro linebacker was limited to just six games last season due to a fractured ankle. It initially appeared as though he would not be able to return during the playoffs, with the 49ers advising him to focus on 2026 during his recovery process. Warner’s progress left the door open to him playing in the NFC title game had San Francisco advanced, though.

To no surprise, then, Vic Tafur of The Athletic writes Warner has healed in full with time to spare before training camp. San Francisco’s defensive centerpiece certainly would not have been at 100% had he been able to suit up in January, but that will be the case when he next takes the field. Warner’s return will offer a substantial boost to the 49ers’ defense to begin 2026.

San Francisco struggled in a number of defensive categories in 2025, as the unit dealt with a number of high-profile injuries. Warner managing to avoid another stretch of missed time would be critical, given the four-time Pro Bowler’s consistent production throughout his decorated career. The linebacker spot saw some turnover this offseason for the 49ers, with Dee Winters being traded away and Curtis Robinson departing in free agency.

Their absences, along with the fact Eric Kendricks remains unsigned, has left fifth-round rookie Jaden Dugger in position to compete for playing time early in his career. Regardless of what happens on that front during training camp and the preseason, having Warner back in the fold will be a welcomed sight for all involved. Four years remain on his contract, and expectations will be high for another standout campaign in 2026 with a clean bill of health.
