49ers lineman has unique franchise milestone in his sight

San Francisco 49ers right tackle Colton McKivitz is entering his seventh NFL season and remains firmly entrenched as a key piece of the team's offensive line. After signing a three-year contract extension in 2025, McKivitz is under contract through the 2028 season.

If he plays out the remainder of that deal, McKivitz will spend nine seasons with the 49ers—putting him just one year away from joining one of the franchise's most exclusive clubs.

"I want to be on that 10-year wall," McKivitz told 49ers.com last week.

Players who spend at least 10 seasons with the organization earn a place on a plaque displayed inside the 49ers' headquarters. The wall honors some of the greatest players in franchise history, including Frank Gore, Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana, and many other team legends.

The 49ers selected McKivitz in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Although he was waived during final roster cuts before his second season, he returned to the practice squad and has remained with the organization ever since.

McKivitz has started 56 regular-season games during his NFL career, including every game over the past three seasons. He has also started five postseason contests.

"I don't want to leave here," McKivitz said. "Obviously, being cut, I've got some scars there. But there was a reason why I was drafted here, why I was cut here, and why I still play here. Now I've had three good seasons of starting, and I'm going into the fourth."

The veteran tackle credits much of his loyalty to the culture inside the 49ers' building, where the focus remains squarely on competing for championships.

He also believes the team's locker room sets the organization apart.

"There's a sense of family," McKivitz said. "When you have a core group of players who understand a winning culture and understand the standard of what this franchise was built on… it's hard for guys to turn that away."

McKivitz continues to anchor the offensive line opposite All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and is coming off arguably the best season of his career. According to Pro Football Focus, he earned a career-high 84.2 offensive grade and a 90.4 run-blocking grade in 2025.

His 72.6 pass-blocking grade was the third-highest mark of his career, and continued growth in that area would further strengthen the 49ers' offense heading into the 2026 season.
