49ers Make Roster Decision After Cutting Kicker With Two Misses in Week 1 Win

The San Francisco 49ers have found themselves in a rather unfortunate situation following their Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks. This is after star tight end George Kittle was ruled out for multiple weeks due to a hamstring injury that was sustained against Seattle. The team announced on Tuesday that Kittle has been placed on injured reserve, which will require at least four missed games.

On top of that, Brock Purdy also came out of the win with injuries to his toe and shoulder, which has put the Pro Bowl quarterback’s status for their Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints in doubt.

On Tuesday, the Niners made a roster decision that they’re hoping will make a significant impact not only against the Saints, but for the rest of the season as well. This comes in the form of signing kicker Eddy Pineiro.

The NFL reported the news via social media.

The Pineiro signing comes just hours after the Niners cut placekicker Jake Moody, who missed two field goals in Sunday’s 17-13 win over the Seahawks. Pineiro holds the honor of being the third-most accurate kicker in NFL history with a success rate of 88.1%, and he will take the mantle as San Francisco’s primary placekicker starting Sunday against the Saints.

Pineiro entered free agency during the offseason after spending the last three years of his career with the Carolina Panthers. He wasn’t able to sign with a new team during the offseason, but he’s now finally found a new home with the Niners.

Pineiro is not expected to make a groundbreaking impact on San Francisco, but his arrival should help stabilize what turned out to be a weak spot in the offense, particularly in late-game situations. The fact that he's on a one-year deal allows the Niners to immediately address a significant roster issue without locking themselves up to a long-term contract with their new kicker.
