Chad Reuter of NFL.com released a five-round 2026 mock draft, which aligns perfectly for the San Francisco 49ers, who currently hold no selections beyond the fourth round. The projection accounts for all six of the team's picks, with general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan addressing several roster needs.
At the top of the list—according to Reuter—is finding a long-term successor to Trent Williams, especially as the veteran left tackle remains in a contract standoff with the team. Reuter has the 49ers selecting former Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor with the No. 27 overall pick.
"Even if the 49ers and Trent Williams come to an agreement on a contract restructure for 2026, the veteran left tackle will be 38 when the season starts," Reuter wrote. "Iheanachor played on the right side at Arizona State but lined up on both sides at East Los Angeles College. He possesses the athleticism to be an excellent pass protector on either end of San Francisco's O-line."
Such a move would help solidify the most critical position along the offensive front while serving as a long-term investment in protecting franchise quarterback Brock Purdy.
The 49ers shift to defense in the second round, selecting former Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad with the No. 58 overall pick. He started 11 games in 2025, recording 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, and four passes defensed, earning second-team All-SEC honors.
San Francisco does not own a third-round pick after trading for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa. All four of the team's remaining selections come in the fourth round.
Here's how Reuter projects those picks:
Waiting until the fourth round to address the pass rush is a notable decision, given that it remains one of the 49ers' most pressing needs. Overton has totaled just seven sacks across four collegiate seasons, raising questions about immediate impact.
Doubling up at offensive tackle could prove wise, but some might wonder if skipping on adding a guard is a good idea, particularly with the starting left guard spot still unsettled.
Jacob Camenker of USA Today similarly has the 49ers addressing their future at offensive tackle in his first-round mock draft. However, he projects Utah's Caleb Lomu to San Francisco at No. 27 overall—a selection that has gained traction in multiple projections.
"The 49ers need to invest in an eventual successor for Trent Williams, who will turn 38 in July," Camenker wrote. "Lomu is a great athlete with excellent movement skills and room to add more weight and power to his 6-6, 313-pound frame. Drafting him now to learn behind Williams, or play left guard until Williams calls it quits, would be a wise investment for San Francisco."
While not a mock draft, Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine highlighted each NFL team's ideal outcome in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. For the San Francisco 49ers, the dream scenario involves landing a top offensive tackle at No. 27 overall.
San Francisco could be hoping that Georgia's Monroe Freeling slips slightly in the draft, giving the team a chance to secure the promising lineman.
"[The 49ers hope the] Monroe Freeling hype doesn't turn him into a top-20 pick and the Niners are able to get him at No. 27," Ballentine wrote. "They are the perfect landing spot as they could mold him into the long-term Trent Williams replacement."
