49ers nightmare? Schefter fuels Aaron Donald unretirement buzz

As if watching their NFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, acquire Myles Garrett wasn't concerning enough, the San Francisco 49ers may soon have another reason to worry.

Since landing Garrett, speculation has grown that retired defensive tackle Aaron Donald could make a stunning NFL comeback, rejoining the Rams and helping form one of the league's most intimidating defensive fronts. Donald himself has even suggested the possibility is real.

That's a scenario the 49ers—and every team that will face the Rams this season—would rather avoid.

San Francisco opens its 2026 season against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, giving the team an early look at Garrett in Los Angeles' defense. The Rams are already viewed as one of the NFL's top Super Bowl contenders. Adding a future Hall of Famer like Donald would only strengthen their championship aspirations.

On Monday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter added more fuel to the growing speculation surrounding Donald's potential return.

"The idea here is Donald himself has floated that he could potentially return to Los Angeles," Schefter said on ESPN's NFL Live, via Peter Panacy of Niner Noise. "He's thinking about it. Training camp is getting closer next month. They'd have to come up with a plan for him to bring him back."

Donald spent all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Rams before retiring following the 2023 campaign. His departure was undoubtedly welcome news for the 49ers, who no longer had to game-plan for one of the most dominant defenders in league history twice each season.

Now, however, there appears to be a legitimate possibility that Donald could return to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines once again.

During his illustrious career, Donald amassed 111 sacks while earning 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight first-team All-Pro honors, and a reputation as one of the greatest defensive players of his generation. He is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Schefter believes a reunion with the Rams makes perfect sense.

"But where else right now would Aaron Donald be more wanted, more celebrated, more respected than in the Rams locker room, where Myles Garrett is already waiting for him?" Schefter continued.

"Again, no decision from Aaron Donald and we'll see whether the two sides can get it done, but there seems to be a lot of momentum to the idea that this is certainly possible."
