49ers officially release edge-rusher Dee Ford

On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers released defensive lineman Dee Ford after three seasons with the team.

Long rumored to be a post-June 1 cut from the 49ers' roster, the team made the move official Wednesday.

Injuries have hampered Ford over the past few years. He played in just seven games combined over the 2020 and 2021 seasons for the 49ers.

Ford played in six games last season, finishing with five tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble.

Over three seasons in San Francisco, Ford played 18 games, compiling 22 tackles, 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Ford was the No. 23 pick overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2014 draft out of Auburn. Ford spent his first five seasons in the NFL with Kansas City, posting 137 tackles, 30.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 67 games with the Chiefs.

After his first and only Pro Bowl nod in 2018, Kansas City traded Ford to San Francisco, and he signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Niners ahead of the 2019 season.
