49ers Player Legitimately Quit On Team Mid-Game vs. Rams

Following the San Francisco 49ers' loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, Kyle Shanahan revealed that one of his veteran players on defense refused to enter the game when their number was called.

During the second half of action, the 49ers asked De'Vondre Campbell to fill in for Dre Greenlaw at linebacker. Not only did Campbell refuse to play, he then took a trip to the locker room mid-game. It was a selfish move from a player who was just demoted to the bench. After the stunt he pulled last night, it's safe to say he has played his final game in San Francisco.

"People noticed, but when someone says that, you move on," Shanahan told reporters. "That's somebody who doesn't want to play football. That's pretty simple. I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so we don't need to talk about him anymore."

Campbell knew he'd be a backup linebacker for the 49ers once Greenlaw returns from his Achilles injury. The fact that he refused to accept that role is a pretty rough look for him.

49ers star George Kittle was asked about Campbell's behavior during his postgame press conference. The All-Pro tight end had no problem sharing his true thoughts.

"It's one person making a selfish decision. I've never been around anybody that's ever done that, and I hope I'm never around anybody who does that again," Kittle said.

Campbell signed a one year, $5 million contract with the 49ers in the offseason. He'll most likely be released in the coming days.

When asked if Campbell will be released, Shanahan replied, "We'll figure out something." It doesn't take a genius to read between the lines there.

In 13 games with the 49ers, Campbell had 79 tackles. Obviously, fans will remember him for the incredibly selfish stunt he pulled in a must-win game.

The real question is whether or not another team will give Campbell a chance. Players might not want to suit up with someone who can just quit mid-job.
