49ers potentially losing Trent Williams could have huge repercussions

The San Francisco 49ers could be left with a major void to fill on their offensive line in the coming weeks.

Veteran left tackle Trent Williams, 37, is entering the final year of a three-year, $82.7M contract he signed with the 49ers just ahead of the 2024 season. Williams is set to count nearly $39M against the salary cap in 2026, which is why San Francisco has been trying to come to an agreement with him on a restructured contract.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the two sides have not made much progress in contract talks. In fact, Schefter reported on Tuesday that Williams and the Niners are in a "standoff" that could end in divorce.

Trent Williams has been an anchor for the 49ers

Williams made the Pro Bowl last year for the 12th time in his 15-season NFL career. He played in 16 games and proved that he is still capable of performing at an elite level even as he approaches his 38th birthday.

In addition to the Pro Bowl selections, Williams has been named an All-Pro five times in his career. He was a first-team All-Pro three consecutive seasons with the Niners from 2021-2023.

Williams missed several games during the 2024 season due to an ankle injury, but there were no lingering effects this past year. All indications are that he is healthy heading into his 16th NFL season, which is why he is likely seeking to remain one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the league.

Losing Trent Williams would be a massive hit

The 49ers will need more depth at offensive tackle even if they are able to retain Williams in 2026. They have no viable backup option behind the veteran, so losing Williams would be a massive blow to Kyle Shanahan's offense.

The NFL's "legal tampering" period of free agency begins on March 9, so the Niners still have time to work toward a contract resolution with Williams. It is unclear whether Williams is seeking a multiyear deal, but you can understand why San Francisco would have some concerns about his age.
