The San Francisco 49ers made some progress in locking down some foundational franchise talent this week. The Niners and George Kittle agreed to a four-year, $75 million extension to keep him in the Bay Area through the coming years.
It's a major move certainly as there is simply no replacing what Kittle contributes leadership wise and within Kyle Shanahan's offense. But the team and their fans await progress on the contract extension for Brock Purdy.
The two sides have not closed in on any deal yet and the timetable for getting one done is murky at this point.
Now there is no talks of replacing him though the Niners have added three quarterbacks to the depth chart this offseason. One of them they found in the seventh round, as they did with Purdy just a few years ago.
San Francisco took a flier on Indiana's Kurtis Rourke week ago in the draft, adding some competition to the bottom of the depth chart. Rourke tore his ACL last season, but played through the injury with the Hoosiers.
Niners' general manager John Lynch explained that pick this week while adding an update on a potential return for the rookie.
"A guy that we really liked, and I think really displayed his toughness—played a lot of the year on a partially torn ACL," Lynch said. "It was a previous ACL that was done in '22, and kind of a re-tear, but toughed it out, and played through it.
"Had surgery after the season. So, we took him with the understanding that he's not going to likely be cleared until training camp, but we just felt like there was a lot of talent, a lot of ability. The guy plays the game the right way, and you can't have enough good quarterbacks."
There's certainly some truth to that final line. That's how the Niners ended up with Purdy in the first place.
As it stands now, Rourke sits behind Purdy and Mac Jones, the starter's presumed understudy as offseason programs get started. His injury situation may keep him several steps behind Jones in competing for any backup positioning.
Nonetheless, fans are starved for progress in the matter of Purdy's extension. The Niners have taken care of the reserves behind him. Now, they must lock in their franchise guy for the long term.
