49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo: Loss of RB Raheem Mostert 'really sucks'

The San Francisco 49ers originally believed running back Raheem Mostert would miss roughly eight weeks of action with chipped cartilage in his knee. However, the situation changed Tuesday when Mostert confirmed he would have season-ending surgery.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo spoke with the media about Mostert going down after he recorded just two carries for 20 yards in this past Sunday's 41-33 victory at the Detroit Lions.

"With Raheem, it really sucks — it does. There’s no way around it," Garoppolo said. "It’s one of those tough breaks for him. Just getting started, off to a hot start like that, and then you lose him. So we’re going to miss him."

Garoppolo added praise for ball-carriers Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon. Mitchell, a rookie and sixth-round draft selection, finished Sunday's win with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

"The young guys — like Elijah did in the game and Hasty, I’ve seen it last year with Hasty, he’s always ready to roll. He’s a gamer," Garoppolo continued. "And then we’ll bring Trey along, get him ready for this week. I mean, they’re a good group — they really are. They complement each other well. It’s a little bit different take with each one of them, they each have their own style of doing it. But it’s all effective. And I think with the O-line we’ve got, tight ends, fullbacks, and receivers blocking, it makes for a good group."

The 49ers next play at the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday. Philadelphia routed the Atlanta Falcons 32-6 in Week 1.
