  • Mac Jones led the San Francisco 49ers to a 20-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7.
  • Jones, filling in for injured Brock Purdy, received some good news after Sunday's win.
  • The 49ers hope Purdy returns for Week 8, possibly ending Jones' starting streak.

Mac Jones got his fifth straight start for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday as the 27-year-old quarterback continued to fill in for the injured Brock Purdy. Jones led the Niners to a 20-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in their Week 7 matchup, finishing with 17-of-26 completed passes for 152 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. The former Alabama Crimson Tide star also added five carries for 11 rushing yards.

Jones and the 49ers secured a nice bounce-back victory following last week’s 30-19 loss to Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jones now has four wins in five games played this season.

Jones started his NFL career as the New England Patriots’ first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After three years in New England, Jones took his talents to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. The Jacksonville native then signed a two-year deal with the Niners in the offseason worth $8.1 million.

San Francisco brought Jones in to serve as Purdy’s primary backup. Purdy, however, suffered a Grade 3 turf toe injury in the Niners’ Week 4 loss to the Jaguars, leading to Jones taking on QB1 responsibilities in Purdy’s stead.

Jones has stepped up in a big way for the 49ers, and his gritty performance against the Falcons on Sunday marked a key milestone for the 6-foot-3 quarterback. According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, Jones has earned a $400,000 bonus for his fourth win. On top of that, Jones can potentially pocket $100,000 for each victory moving forward.

It is important to note, however, that the Niners are hopeful to get Purdy back in Week 8. The Pro Bowl QB has already missed five straight games, but San Francisco is optimistic about his return in its next game. Jones’ current run will come to an end once Purdy returns, but the backup quarterback could still get one more game if the latter is unable to recover in time.

The Niners are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 26, in a road matchup against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.
