49ers QBs speak: Mac Jones, Tanner Mordecai on learning from Brock Purdy

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones joked that now that Brock Purdy is among the NFL's highest-paid players, he knows who to call if he ever needs some Venmo money. NBC Sports Bay Area caught up with Jones last week at Tight End University (TEU), the annual training summit co-founded by teammate George Kittle.

Purdy did not attend TEU due to a commitment to a charity golf event, but his backups, Jones and Tanner Mordecai, were there.

Jones, who joined the 49ers this offseason on a two-year deal, is eager to rejuvenate his career after stints with the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars. He saw San Francisco as the perfect opportunity, especially after seeing Sam Darnold turn his one season with the team into a chance with the Minnesota Vikings and a lucrative payday with the Seattle Seahawks.

Asked what he's learned from Purdy so far, Jones highlighted the starter's attention to detail.

"He's very, like, meticulous about how he goes about his work," Jones told beat reporter Jennifer Lee Chan. "I've known him for a decent amount of time, but to really get close with him, and see how he operates, he's very, like Type A, very organized, and he wants everything to be perfect. That's why he's had success in the league.

"He's done it very consistently, and he's really striving to do it again. He's not just satisfied because he had a couple good years. He wants to be great every day, so it's pretty cool."

Mordecai, entering his second NFL season after signing as an undrafted free agent last year, has also been impressed by Purdy's meticulous preparation.

"I think it was interesting seeing him, just Saturdays before the game, how well he knew the game plan," Mordecai shared. "I think there's a lot of stuff he does on his own, outside the building, and obviously, it translates to the field, and that's definitely something I learned from him, too."

Jones added, "[He's] just really consistent, loves football. We'll have a good time out there. He's pretty serious when he's out there, but he still cranks it up a little bit with some laughs and jokes, so I really like it."

Kittle recently revealed that Purdy's first big purchase was a home in the Nashville area, where Kittle also resides during the offseason. That allows the two to train together more frequently.

When asked if Purdy's new financial status has changed him, Jones insisted the 49ers' starting quarterback remains grounded.

"He hasn't changed at all," Jones said. "We went out and played golf and did all that stuff. He's gonna be the same guy. And it's really someone that I can learn from and grow with."

Mordecai agreed, adding, "Brock is the salt to the earth. A super genuine dude, and money would definitely never change Brock."

Jones is eager for the season ahead, confident the 49ers have what it takes to rebound from last season's 6-11 finish and return to contention.

"It's just a bunch of winners, and I know that we're gonna get it back on track here this year," Jones said. "The guys work every day, the coaches and players, and it's just a really well-run organization. So, I'm looking forward to continue to grow and learn."
