49ers Ranking of 3 'Absolute Worst' Offseason Moves
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

It appears as though the San Francisco 49ers allowed a Magic 8-Ball to make their free agency decisions thus far. Some of the moves just do not make good football sense.

There are 3 moves worth analysis, and ...

One move in particular does not feel right football-wise, or financially for the cap-strapped 49ers. ... making it the "absolute worst.''

The best move they made (relatively speaking) was bringing back fullback Kyle Juszczyk who is the heart and soul of that offense along with tight end George Kittle. Juszczyk was waived in a salary cap move and was only brought back to the team, on essentially the same contract terms, after the team traded Jordan Mason.

It was odd to say goodbye and then to say hello, but Juszczyk only has a minimal cap hit of $3 million.

A move that will come back to haunt them later on, though, is allowing Dre Greenlaw to escape via free agency without making him a qualified offer before he agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos. Only after he agreed to terms did the 49ers reach out to Greenlaw's representatives to try and match the deal. Not to say he would have left the Broncos at the altar, but if they offered to beat the Broncos offer, they might have had a better chance of re-signing him.

Instead, Lynch walks away with his tail between his legs.

However, the worst move the 49ers made this offseason has to be consummating the Mason trade.

Mason was an inexpensive but experienced running back who performed admirably when Christian McCaffrey was out due to injuries. The 49ers traded him to the Minnesota Vikings, for a pick swap this season and a sixth-round selection next season. They virtually gave him away for nothing.

The problem the 49ers are going to have is who do they have that can spell McCaffrey in the event he gets injured again. They have three other running backs on the roster, but none with the elusive speed Mason possesses.

The 49ers might end up having to reach for one in the draft come April. ... which would mark another offseason misstep.
