Cowing suffered a torn hamstring in training camp and was expected to miss at least six weeks while recovering. The second-year wideout appeared in 15 games as a rookie in 2024, finishing with four receptions for 80 yards. San Francisco delayed placing Cowing on injured reserve to preserve the option of designating him for return later in the season, rather than using one of their two designated-to-return slots during roster cut-downs.
Morstead, entering his 17th NFL season, joined the 49ers this offseason to replace longtime punter Mitch Wishnowsky.
