49ers Release Brock Purdy Update After Jaguars Loss

The San Francisco 49ers (3-1) are getting back to their usual winning ways after a disappointing 2024 campaign, but they must avoid one problem that constantly plagues them.

The 49ers finished 6-11 last year after stars like running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk ended the season on injured reserve. This season, they've stayed afloat despite injuries to quarterback Brock Purdy (toe), pass rusher Nick Bosa (knee), George Kittle (hamstring), and more.

Purdy played in Week 1 before missing the next two games due to turf toe. The Iowa State alum returned for Sunday's 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the 49ers revealed an ominous update about the signal-caller on Monday, via the team's website.

San Francisco listed Purdy as a DNP (did not practice) on Monday's estimated practice report. This means that the team didn't practice, but the former Pro Bowler would not have participated if the team had held one.

Purdy complained about toe pain after Sunday's game, via CBS Sports' Cameron Salerno. This setback is ill-timed, as the 49ers will play the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan opened up about the situation on Monday, via Salerno.

"Hopefully we'll find out more later today, but any time guys are sore and hurting on a Monday, you usually don't stress too much about it," he said. "But anytime you have a Thursday game, it's a totally different element. So, I'm concerned with anybody who's not totally healthy at this moment, but we'll have to get more information on that later today to really have a clue of what to speculate."

49ers Must Continue Weathering Injury Storm

In addition to Purdy, wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, rib) received "DNP" designations. San Francisco would have to depend on backup quarterback Mac Jones as well as receivers Kendrick Bourne, Demarcus Robinson, and Skyy Moore if those players miss Thursday's game.

The bright side is that San Francisco is 2-0 with Jones under center this season. The former Alabama signal-caller completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards with three touchdowns in a 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 before completing 27 of 41 passes for 284 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Week 3's 16-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Thursday night's game will start at 8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video.
