This marks Sudfeld's second stint with the 49ers. He originally joined the team in 2021 after spending time with the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles. Most recently, Sudfeld spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Detroit Lions.
The Commanders drafted Sudfeld in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Indiana. Now 31 years old, he has appeared in six career NFL games, throwing for 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The veteran last appeared in a game during the 2022 season.
The 49ers currently have three quarterbacks on their roster—Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, and Carter Bradley , the son of 49ers assistant head coach Gus Bradley.
