The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back a familiar face, acquiring defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2027 fourth round draft pick. The move, reported Tuesday, gives San Francisco a major defensive reinforcement as the team looks to make a deep postseason run.
The 49ers entered the deal with a 6-1 record and sit atop the NFC West. Buckner, meanwhile, was playing for a Colts team that has struggled to a 2-5 start and recently fired general manager Chris Ballard. The trade gives the veteran defensive tackle another opportunity to compete for a championship with the franchise that originally drafted him.
Buckner began his NFL career with the 49ers after being selected seventh overall in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Oregon. He spent four seasons in San Francisco, becoming a key piece of the defensive line and helping the team reach Super Bowl LIV following the 2019 season.
The 49ers traded Buckner to Indianapolis in 2020 in exchange for a first-round pick, which became defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. Now, more than six years later, Buckner is heading back to the Bay Area.
Despite being 32 years old, Buckner continues to produce at a high level. Through seven games this season, he has recorded 31 tackles, four sacks and three pass breakups. His ability to pressure quarterbacks from the interior makes him a valuable addition to San Francisco’s defense.
San Francisco has championship ambitions, and bringing back Buckner could help strengthen its defensive front for the second half of the season.
His size, experience and ability to disrupt opposing offenses should give the 49ers another dangerous presence alongside their existing defensive talent. Buckner’s familiarity with the organization could also help him transition quickly into his new role.
The price is relatively modest for a player with his résumé. San Francisco is surrendering a fourth-round pick in 2027, betting that Buckner can make an immediate impact during its postseason push.
For Indianapolis, the trade represents another major roster change. The Colts also dealt eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, signaling a willingness to move veteran talent as the organization reassesses its future.
Buckner has been one of Indianapolis’ most important defensive players since arriving in 2020. Losing him leaves a significant hole along the defensive line, but the additional draft capital could help the franchise rebuild.
The reunion gives Buckner a chance to return to where his career began and pursue another Super Bowl appearance. For the 49ers, acquiring a proven defensive star could be the move that strengthens their championship hopes.
