Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray believes he can be the a bigger weapon with his running ability this season as he is fully rehabilitated from knee surgery two seasons ago. This can only be bad news for the division-rival San Francisco 49ers.
He appeared on a recent episode of the PHNX Arizona Cardinals Podcast and pronounced himself fit and said the knee is stronger than it was last season where he only attempted a career-low 4.59 rushing attempts per game.
"Honestly, they say, Year 2 (post-knee injury) is the best year, and honestly, how I feel right now is as if it never happened," Murray said. "Talking to [offensive coordinator Drew Petzing] and [quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork] feeling like going into this year, I'll be able to do whatever I want to do."
This major change could mean trouble for the 49ers who must face the Cardinals twice this season.
The quarterback was alluding to the ACL surgery he required which included some meniscus repair following the injury he sustained in 2022. He returned to action in November 2023, but admitted he tweaked his knee in the opening game of 2024.
The Cards finished the 2024 season under .500 at 8-9. Murray finished fourth among quarterbacks with 57 total rushing yards. However, the most important and telling statistic was that Murray started all 17 games without significant incident.
"I do feel like I have to run more next year," Murray said during the podcast. "I'm open to running more next year, just because its such a weapon, you know it's such a weapon...When [Baltimore Ravens starter Lamar Jackson] hands the ball off, 'Ahh' you know what I mean? So I think for us, part of the emphasis going into next season is conceptually, on time, I feel I'm one of the best in the league."
