49ers rumors: Mac Jones mentioned as trade candidate

The San Francisco 49ers have a home test against the Arizona Cardinals on the docket for Sunday that comes amid Nick Bosa injury concerns. The 49ers’ defense has the depth to withstand Bosa’s issues, as well as depth at the quarterback position in the form of Mac Jones, who was mentioned in a possible trade scenario.

Jones rumors continued to swirl ahead of the 49ers’ upcoming game, this time from Tom Pelissero of The Ringer as he mentioned the 49ers’ talented backup and former first round pick.

“Mac is one…But that’s gonna cost you,” Pelissero said. He also threw Minnesota QB JJ McCarthy’s name into the mix along with the Colts’ Anthony Richardson, and the Raiders’ Kirk Cousins.

“I would absolutely not rule out the possibility of Kirk Cousins being traded during the season,” Pelissero added.

Jones complimented the 49ers organization prior to the 2026-27 season and has performed well as a spot starter during times of Brock Purdy injuries. His ability to throw precision passes in rhythm have helped him to harken back to his national championship winning days with former Alabama coach Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Jones doesn’t have the strongest arm and isn’t much of a scramble threat, but he has the skill set to thrive in the right system.

Jones and the 49ers’ upcoming game against the Cardinals will give coach Kyle Shanahan’s team a chance to square off against Mike LaFleur’s young and hungry Cardinals, led by rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, who could see more game action, and struggling former first round pick Marvin Harrison.

Jones still has plenty of value to the 49ers as a backup, but Purdy looks ready to seize the moment and become one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks again heading into September 27’s game.
