The San Francisco 49ers are adding more depth to their offensive line, as the team tries to march back to the Super Bowl. The 49ers are signing veteran offensive lineman Chris Hubbard, per ESPN. Hubbard is agreeing to a one-year deal in the Bay.

Hubbard is a long-time player who was with the Tennessee Titans last season. The lineman played in nine games for Tennessee before getting hurt. He finished the 2023 season on injured reserve, due to the biceps ailment. The offensive tackle has spent a decade in the NFL, after signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013 as an un drafted free agent. He also played with the Cleveland Browns for several seasons, after leaving the Steelers.

The offensive lineman has played in nearly 100 games during his NFL career. The 6-foot-4, 295 pound tackle played his college football at Alabama-Birmingham.

The expectations are once again high for the 49ers, after the team made the Super Bowl in 2023. Hubbard will add depth and more pass protection for gunslinger Brock Purdy. San Francisco is investing on offense this offseason, as the team used their first round draft pick on wide receiver Ricky Pearsall from Florida.

The 49ers took two offensive linemen in the 2024 NFL Draft. The first one was taken in the third round. San Francisco used that pick on Dominick Puni, a powerful tackle from Kansas in the Big 12 conference. Puni played left tackle at Kansas, and was named First-Team All-Big 12. The additions of Puni and Hubbard should give the 49ers a lot of talent at the tackle spots.

The team then used a sixth round pick to get Jarrett Kingston, a guard from USC. Kingston played for two Pac-12 conference teams in his college tenure, as he also suited up for Washington State. Kingston is a beast at 6-foot-4, 305 pounds, and will add even more size and strength to the line. The 49ers certainly have a plethora of riches in the trenches, and the additions should help not only Purdy but also the running game.

San Francisco already has long-time veteran Trent Williams at left tackle, so there will be a lot of competition for these offensive line spots. The team should be able to protect their quarterback as well as anybody. Gunslinger Brock Purdy was sacked 28 times in 2023, per StatMuse. The San Francisco front office is clearly hoping to build a Super Bowl caliber roster, and using the offensive line to try and do it.

The 49ers have reached the Super Bowl twice in the last five seasons, but lost both times to the Kansas City Chiefs. Time will tell if the new additions are able to help San Francisco get over the hump.
