Former Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. The former first-round pick played two games last season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Humphries was originally selected in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Cardinals. He spent every season of his career aside from last year with that club. Humphries started 98 games for Arizona before an ACL tear forced the Cardinals to part ways with him.
Following his release, Humphries signed a $2 million, one-year deal with the Chiefs once he was fully recovered. Upon his return he suffered a hamstring injury and finished his season by playing only a meaningless Week 18 game against the Denver Broncos.
He did not play in Kansas City's playoff run or the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
Humphries did not play well in his short stint with the Chiefs and missed blocks which yielded two sacks. ... earning him criticism from KC fans.
Humphries will need to show he is completely healthy, as his representatives say he now is. And, ideally?
He must regain his pre-injury form if he is going to make the 53-man roster.
He is not coming in to San Francisco to become a starter.
He has not played right tackle since 2016, his second season in the league. However, with Trent Williams firmly entrenched as the left tackle, and with Colton McKivitz planned on the right side, the hope Humphries has it to project as a swing tackle.
It is important to note since this was a post-draft signing, there will be no compensation paid to Kansas City in the form of draft picks next season.
