49ers Sign RB Zamir White, CB Eli Apple

San Francisco had worked out White and Nyheim Miller-Hines, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. A recent audition also brought Eli Apple back to team headquarters.

The 11th-year cornerback will be called upon again, with the team announcing another agreement with the former first-rounder. The 49ers had just released Apple — who signed a reserve/futures contract with the team in January — earlier this month. The 31-year-old corner, who played two 49ers games last season, is on team No. 7 as a pro.

The team also signed defensive lineman Xavier Thomas and waived wide receiver Junior Bergen and punter Jack Bouwmeester. San Francisco also waived D-lineman K.J. Henry with an injury designation. The Bouwmeester exit leaves veteran Corliss Waitman as the only punter on the team’s 90-man roster.

White joins a 49ers team that went through its Titans joint practice without Christian McCaffrey, Jordan James and Kaelon Black. Third-year RB Isaac Guerendo remains on the active/PUP list. This will be White’s first opportunity since his Raiders rookie contract expired in March.

Las Vegas briefly turned to the former fourth-round pick as its Josh Jacobs successor but scrapped that plan it fairly short order. Becoming the rare rookie-deal player to play for three full-time HCs with one franchise (Josh McDaniels, Antonio Pierce, Pete Carroll), White closed out his Vegas tenure as an Ashton Jeanty backup. White averaged 4.3 yards per carry as a Jacobs backup/injury fill-in during the 2023 season, but he did not eclipse three yards per tote — admittedly behind bad Raiders offensive lines — in either of the past two seasons. White handled just 12 carries in 2025.

McCaffrey is dealing with unspecified tightness. The former Offensive Player of the Year held up last season, taking an NFL-most 413 touches, but missed most of the 2024 campaign due to multiple injuries. Now 30, McCaffrey will be a three-down presence once again in San Francisco this season. James and Black are competing for the No. 2 gig; at least, they will resume that competition when healthy. White (nine career starts) and Herbert will help the team in the meantime.
