49ers signing veteran tight end Logan Thomas
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a deal to sign tight end Logan Thomas, a veteran who has been productive for the Washington Commanders over the past four seasons.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Thomas (6-6, 250) out of Virginia Tech in the fourth round (No. 120 overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Last season, Thomas recorded 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns through 16 game appearances (15 starts) with the Commanders, playing 70 percent of the offensive snaps, per Pro Football Reference.

In four seasons with the Commanders, Thomas has tallied 184 receptions for 1,685 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has also appeared in games with the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Thomas' most productive statistical season came in 2020 with Washington, when he recorded 72 receptions for 670 yards and six touchdowns. He has played in 30 games over the past two seasons.

The signing adds an experienced backup behind All-Pro George Kittle, a role the 49ers have sought to fill for years. Thomas joins a tight end room that includes Kittle, Cameron Latu, Mason Pline, Eric Saubert, Jake Tonges, and Brayden Willis.

Thomas, who is entering his 11th NFL season, is 32 years old.
