The 2024 season has been difficult for the San Francisco 49ers in many ways, but one player is finishing the year while dealing with an unimaginable loss.
49ers defensive back Charvarius Ward's one-year-old daughter Amani Joy died in October after dealing with extensive heart issues.
In a new article from Michael Silver of The Athletic, Ward spoke candidly about the toll this season has taken on the team, and how he's personally felt since the loss of his daughter.
“There’s been a dark cloud over us all season,” Ward said after the team's loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
“This will be a good offseason for this team to regroup, refocus and try to rekindle the spark. I don’t know if I’m gonna be back, but I know this team is still gonna be great, with or without me."
After missing three games, Ward returned to help the team salvage its season, but opened up about his mental state following the loss on Thursday, which has all but ended San Francisco's postseason hopes.
“It’s been hard for me personally to go to work every day, every game — even to practice or go to meetings,” Ward admitted.
“I almost left a couple of times. I know fans probably hate me (for saying that), but [expletive] it, it’s real life. It’s bigger than football. This is the hardest time of my life for sure.”
Many fans on social media showed their support for Ward, assuring him that he would have had their respect no matter how he chose to handle the rest of the season.
"I can't even imagine what it's like to come back to work after something like that. I wouldn't have been mad at him if he took the rest of the year off," said one 49ers fan.
"here with u all the way," another fan said.
"No, I don't hate him and don't blame him. Can't stand the 49er fans who can't take criticism of this team. Life is more important. Real one who doesn't need to explain," said yet another fan.
Ward and the 49ers are dealing with the fallout of Thursday's loss to the Rams, and with the choice of former teammate De'Vondre Campbell, who refused to play in Thursday's game and has now been released by the team.
